news Snoop Dogg - Ego Trippin' (March 11th Release) - February 27, 2008 By : JustinL

Superstar entertainer and hip hop icon Snoop Dogg readies for his highly anticipated album "Ego Trippin'" releasing on March 11th through Doggystyle/Geffen. Early buzz from industry insiders hint at a new sound that only an artist like Snoop could pull off - including collaborations with legendary producer Teddy Riley and artist Whitey Ford who bring out different sides of the veteran rapper. These unexpected pairings sparked creativity and magic in the studio which translated into an amazingly diverse and innovative album.

Tha Boss Dogg titled the album "Ego Trippin'" because this time around, he is doing just that. After 16 years in the game, Snoop consistently proves himself as not only an entertainer, but a pioneer in hip hop. On Snoop's ninth studio offering, the West Coast rapper is taking chances no other rap artist could pull off, and showing fans a new side we have never seen before. "Ego Trippin'" showcases groundbreaking material and if the first single is any indication - fans will embrace the new sounds. Snoop says, "I named the album Ego Trippin' because after staying relevant for 16 years, I can afford to take chances and have some fun. I always made music to win in my neighborhood but after all these years I needed to do something bigger - I had to get out of my usual gangster zone without losing who I am, this time around I am going to win worldwide."

'Throughout the album, Snoop takes listeners on a musical journey - from funk to eighties vibes to even country music. Forever a fan of Teddy Riley, Snoop was excited to be able to collaborate with the musical genius on this album. Throughout the recording process, they had such great chemistry in the studio that QDT Muzic was birthed - an entity comprised of DJ Quik, Snoop and Teddy that is responsible for overseeing the entire album. Snoop came up with the song concepts, Teddy added his touches to the production and Quik mastered the album. Ego Trippin' marks the first time since "Doggystyle," Snoop's first album, that one individual mastered the entire package - adding a continuity to the sounds that play more like a movie instead of a music recording.

Thematically on Ego Trippin', Snoop is paying tribute to those who inspired him over the years. The musically rich song "Cool" is an interpolation of the classic song originally recorded by The Time. On it, Snoop sings more than raps and the results are phenomenal. It is a song made to dance to and will transport listeners to the eighties with one listen. Another surprise song is entitled "Johnny Cash" and was written and produced by Whitey Ford. The song is a country love ballad and is unlike anything anyone has ever heard from a hip hop superstar. One of Snoop's album favorites is "Say Goodbye," featuring R&B great Charlie Wilson of The Gap Band. Snoop says, "This song makes me want to cry every time I hear it. It is a reflection of my life and how I have grown as not only an artist but also a man - it is about me staying true to where I came from while having to accept where I am in my life today, it's deep."

news World Premiere: G. Malone's "Certified" Video Is Here! - February 25, 2008 By : Lil Jay

And here it finally is! The man of the hour (or should I say year?) is getting closer and closer to the position where he needs to be – on top of the game! As we previously reported, Glasses Malone shot a video for his hit single "Certified" featuring Akon last month, and this video will hopefully help him get to that next level! After dominating radio airwaves and even landing the number one spot on L.A.'s Power 106, the anticipation for the video was building up and it was only right that the West Coast showed tremendous support at the video shoot.

The outcome of the video is very pleasing, they kept it street and added a lot of dark and grimey elements, but innovative at the same time. The only downside is that a lot of the words have been edited out the final version, which takes away from the flow of the song.

The video has been shipped to MTV and BET, and it will air the first time on BET's Rap City on Thursday. But you already know that we ain't gonna let you wait for that long! As always, Dubcnn is taking care of it and bringing you the world premiere of the video. We'll let the visual speak, so let's get this one out there:

Glasses Malone - Certified Feat. Akon (YouTube, Windows Media and QuickTime Video)

The entire Dubcnn staff would like to congratulate Glasses on this great video. Be on the lookout for "The Beach Cruiser" dropping April 1st, it's gonna be crazy! news PR1ME & Dubcnn: Magic Show Documentary - February 23, 2008 By : Eddie Gurrola

Last week, we joined PR1ME on an expedition to the Magic Convention in Las Vegas. PR1ME's debut street album "The Transformation" was just completed, so it was time for everyone to get to work and spread copies around like crazy. As always, we brought our camera to document the trip. Our goal was to capture on film exactly what it takes for an up-and-coming artist to get his name out there and catch the attention of the right people.

The mission was a success for PR1ME and TakeOff Productions, with over 5,000 copies of "The Transformation" being distributed.

Along the way, we had a lot of fun as well. Look out for guest appearances from artists that we ran into during the convention like Bun-B, Young Jeezy, Pusha T of The Clipse, Mos Def, Taje, September 7th, Bad Lucc, and Damani.

This video is one of the tightest we've ever had on Dubcnn! It's an absolute must-watch for anyone interested in how an individual makes "The Transformation" from an ambitious new MC to a future star. PR1ME did it, and you can too. Check out the video below!

news DJ Crazy Toones Discusses His New Projects - February 20, 2008 By : Nima

Dubcnn had the chance to catch up with DJ Crazy Toones to get a few words on his current projects, while he's on the road doing shows with WC. "Ice Cube is shooting a movie in Louisiane right now, he comes home on the weekends to work on "Raw Footage". The album is damn near finished!", Toones said about Cube's upcoming project.

There is no release date as of yet though, we're hoping for a Summer release. If the first single "Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It" is anything to go by, we're in for another raw Ice Cube LP!

Then of course, Young Maylay is working on his street album "The Real Coast Guard", which will be dropping in March. Expect some new music from the project on dubcnn very soon.

A topic that Crazy Toones was very enthusiastic about was talking about Bombai a female DJ from the Bum Squad DJ's. "She's my baby, I'm birthing her to the world. I never took nobody under my wing but I'm taking her. Expect to hear from her." You can currently check out Bombai on K-Day.

Another project that Crazy Toones is involved with is the self-titled Westurn Union mixtape which is coming out soon. Expect some music from that in near future as well. Other projects that are in the works include a Snoop Dogg mixtape, and of course the follow-up to "CT Experience", "It's A Demo". He also mentioned Tha Trapp are working on a new still untitled project. Sounds like he got a lot on his plate, we'll definitely keep you updated on all of them though. Keep it locked.

news Smirnoff Music Series: Common, Q-Tip & Krs-One - February 20, 2008 By : JustinL

Beginning this month, the makers of Smirnoff Vodka are launching the Smirnoff Signature Mix Series, a campaign pairing three acclaimed rappers with contemporary beat-maestros to create new versions of iconic hip-hop songs. Nationally renowned artists Common, Q-Tip, and KRS-One are joining forces with Just Blaze, Cool & Dre, and DJ Premier to remix Common's "The Light," A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight," and Boogie Down Productions' seminal "Criminal Minded."

The Smirnoff Signature Mix Series is part of the brand's ongoing commitment to fostering and promoting both established and emerging musical talent. The program was developed in partnership with Cornerstone, a leading marketing firm in New York City.

Each artist/producer pairing represents a Smirnoff mixed drink made by blending one of the best-selling Smirnoff flavored vodka products with a popular mixer. "The Southside," made with Smirnoff Green Apple flavored vodka and cranberry juice, is the inspiration for Common and Just Blaze' collaboration. "The Blueberry Abstract," made with Smirnoff Blueberry flavored vodka and lemonade, is linked to the partnership between Q-Tip and Cool & Dre. "The Cypha," an exciting blend of Smirnoff Raspberry flavored vodka and pineapple juice, represents the collaboration between KRS-One and DJ Premier.

"I'm honored to have the opportunity to revisit one of my signature songs and give it a breath of fresh air," said KRS-One. "I'm grateful to Smirnoff for providing the opportunity to work with such great talent on such a ground-breaking idea and recreate hip-hop songs."

All three songs, their music videos, and the behind-the-scenes production footage will be available for free download exclusively at SmirnoffSignatureMixSeries.com beginning on February 19th.

Taters tells us about how he got into the business and also why he's currently working with hip-hop artists like De and Ca$his. If you want to try out Balls Deep boxers, Taters was kind enough to give Dubcnn readers a special discount code for any purchases! If you go to Ballsdeep.com, you can get 25% off your order by typing in "youngdedubcnn" as your code!

Los of Guilty also stops by for a few minutes to talk about his group's debut street album "No Contest", which is currently making major noise out in the 805. He also tells us about a solo mixtape that he's working on. All of these topics and much more are covered on this week's episode of Dubcnn Radio, so check it out below!

news The Winner Of The Tyrese Feature Contest: Crooked I! - February 11, 2008 By : Nima

We have the results of dubcnn's contest where the fans voted who Tyrese aka Black Ty should feature on his first single "Cycle Of Death", from his upcoming solo album "Black Rose".

You had 24 hours to listen to the song and to vote, thanks to the hundreds of emails that came in, we appreciated your feedback! The winner of the contest is Crooked I, who came in first, followed by The Game, Kurupt and Bishop Lamont.

After putting Crooked and Ty in touch with each other, Crooked went over to Ty's Headquarter Entertainment studios this weekend and made the connection official. The vibe is right, and in addition to the "Cycle Of Death" song, Crooked was really feeling the production from The Frontline Boyz, Tyrese's production team, and left with like 25 beats in his pocket. We'll keep you updated on the situation, once again thanks to Tyrese for listening to the fans, and most importantly thanks to the fans for being a part of this!

news Devin The Dude Talks Rap-A-Lot, Aftermath & Mixtape - February 7, 2008 By : Nima

Dubcnn reached out to Devin The Dude to get the real deal about him leaving Rap-A-Lot Records, the rumors about him signing to Aftermath and his new mixtape "Smoke Sessions Vol. 1".

"Waitin' To Inhale was my last album on Rap-A-Lot, it got to a point where it was the of end it, my contract ended and I decided not to renew it. There are no bad vibes between me and the label or anything, everything is good, I just decided to move on", he said about his decision.

About the recent rumours of him working with Dr. Dre and signing to Aftermath Records, he had the following to say: "Aftermath? Nah, that's not true. It would probably be a cool thing, but it's not true. Right now I'm just doing my independent thing, working, doing my Coughee Brothas project, we got the "Waitin Our Turn" album out right now. I did get a few phone calls from Dre's people, wanting me to be a part of the "Detox" project, but it hasn't happened yet. I would love to be on it, and hopefully I will."

He's getting ready to release a new mixtape called "Smoke Sessions Vol. 1", which recently leaked to the internet. "It's crazy with the technologies these days, the mixtape was supposed to come out in April. But I heard the quality on the leaked version isn't right, and that's not how it's supposed to sound, so you're gonna have to wait for the real thing!"

No matter what label he's with, we'll definitely be anticipating any new Devin projects, because whenever he drops something, you know you're in for a good time! Keep it locked right here for the latest.

Now The Game has changed his mind. He told Monsta Magazine that he's pleading guilty in court, instead of spending more money on fighting the case. This way, he will only have to serve about 4 months in jail.

"The crazy part about this is that I've had guns before in my life," he explained. "But this time I didn't have a gun. And because one person said I had a gun and coaxed his homies into saying that I had a gun, I'm in a predicament where I'm asking, Do I want to spend another million dollars to fight this trial so who knows what jury's gonna come in and say I'm guilty? Or do I want to save my money, go sit down for four months and accept this felony they're trying to give me for no reason?", The Game told Monsta Magazine.

We'll keep you updated on any development regarding Game's situation. He's still planning to drop his new album "LAX" in June, as previously announced.

news Paid Dues Gears Up For Third Year - Tickets On Sale Now! - February 5, 2008 By : Rud

Following the success of the second annual Paid Dues festival in Southern California and national tour last summer, Murs in association with Guerilla Union (Rock The Bells, Cypress Hill Smoke Out) have announced the event will return to the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, CA on Saturday, March 22.

Rolling into its third year, Paid Dues supports a fan base of a vibrant scene of underground hip-hop artists all on one platform.

Its tradition of showcasing the best in independent rap continues with its 2008 line-up of Sage Francis, Little Brother, Dilated Peoples, Jedi Mind Tricks, Living Legends, Hieroglyphics, Visionaries, Boot Camp Clik with Black Moon, Kool Keith, POS, A-Team, Mac Lethal, Fatlip & Omni, Yak Ballz, B. Dolan and Isaiah with Murs to host, plus a special surprise guest appearance.

"What we’re trying to do with Paid Dues as we go into our third year is: Number one is focus. Being that it's a festival birthed on the west coast we wanted to tailor the bill to appeal a little more to the region so we brought on local staples such as the A-Team, Omni and Fatlip. To knock it out of the park we added the three major west coast crews Living Legends, Hieroglyphics and the Visionaries," explained Murs.

He went on to state, "The second thing we are doing is expanding by grabbing more artists outside of the traditional indie hip-hop family (ie Def Jux, Rhymesayers, Living Legends) so we approached Dilated Peoples and Little Brother. We also wanted to show some love to the decorated veterans of the independent scene so we reached out to Boot Camp Clik and Kool Keith. Third and most importantly we wanted to give back to the awesome fans who've supported us over the past two years to make the is the biggest and best Paid Dues yet. My partner Chang says third year is always the greatest and it seems to be like he's going to be right, again."

Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union explains "We are very proud to have partnered with Murs to build a true platform for independent hip-hop artists and their communities. The third annual episode combines the most notable artists from a myriad of labels, most of whom have new music or projects that can take advantage of our Paid Dues promotional platform. The Living Legends, Boot Camp Clik, Hieroglyphics and Murs all have special projects they will be showcasing for 2008. Sage Francis is working on his Strange Famous label initiatives and I can't wait to see Kool Keith and Yak Ballz! We are especially excited that SanDisk has partnered with Paid Dues to continue their efforts to educate and empower conscious music fans by encouraging our DIY audience to capture, share and distribute content by ‘Waking Up Your Phone.’ It is a very strategic partnership that will help shape the distribution of content that all these artists are capable of producing and sharing with their communities via mobile, on-line and social networking. As always, I'm sure Murs has a couple surprises up his sleeve. Murs for President in 2008. I think he could give the current candidates a run for their money--lyrically speaking at least."

Paid Dues as ever will be an all-ages show and will once again be supported by Dubcnn who will be proud media and partner sponsors for the events again in 2008. $35 pre-sale tickets are on sale now via Guerilla Union, Paid Dues MySpace and Ticketmaster.

Paid Dues Flyer: Front | Back

As ever stay tuned to Dubcnn for the latest news and media from Paid Dues and the forthcoming Rock The Bells events.
