news Kanye West Airs Out Anger At Concert - November 28, 2008 By : Nima

I just got back from Kanye West's latest concert and it was interesting to say the least. I didn't let the fact that Kanye's management wasn't interested in having Hip-Hop outlets interview him about his new album stop me from going, as I had only heard great things about his "Glow In The Dark" stage show.

I wasn't really too sure what to expect, considering Kanye's recent bashing of Hip-Hop as a musical artform and his new album being strictly auto-tuned singing. However, the first hour and a half of the show was good old 'Ye, performing his vast array of hits off his first three albums.

After messing up his second verse on "Through The Wire", Kanye kept going and freestyled the rest of the song, and he didn't hesitate to stop his orchestra either after on "Diamonds Are Forever" he accidentally started rapping the remix, and started over with the original.

His performance was strong and had a good flow, all being backed by the storyline of him being lost in space and trying to find his way back to earth. With "Stronger" being the song that brings him back, he celebrated his return on earth with "Touch The Sky" and "Homecoming". At this point, I was really only expecting him to end it off with "Love Lockdown", to promote the new album.

However, he then stopped the music and went into a long speech about his current musical direction. The event that provoked this was an interview he had had earlier that day with an (unnamed) media outlet. "The interviewer had the nerve to ask me disrespectful ass questions, such as whether I regretted making this new album now that it was done. He then told me that when he first heard it, he thought it was a parody! That's when I ended the interview. I don't make no f-ckin' parodies!"

Kanye continued by explaining that what was most important to him was to make the music that he feels, that he believes in and that makes him happy. And that his feelings are bigger than Hip-Hop. That he cannot express what he has in his heart by rapping, that he wants to sing. "I know I'm not no Whitney Houston, but I know that I got melody in me. People say all this stuff about me singing and using auto-tune, but you know why I use it? Cause it's cool!", Kanye further explained. "I want to make the music that makes me happy, without caring what people say about it or caring about the sales. If I made the music people expected from me and not what I truly felt, then that's what I would call selling out".

After finishing his speech, he proceeded to perform four songs off his new album, including the singles "Love Lockdown" and "Heartless". While I definitely respect Kanye West as an artist and respect him for following his heart, the fact that he is not a good singer is something I can't overlook. He can sing all he wants for all I care, I respect it, but me liking it is a different story. I know that's how a lot of Kanye West fans feel right now, which is why I decided to write this review.

Kanye West's new album "808s & Heartbreak" is in stores now.

news MC Breed Passes Away - November 23, 2008 By : Chad Kiser

As many of you have heard, Flint, Michigan rapper MC Breed has passed away unexpectedly this weekend. Known for his “More Bounce To The Ounce”-inspired debut, Ain’t No Future In Your Frontin’, the legendary MC catapulted to fame at a time when it was unheard of for an emcee out of the mid-west to breakthrough.

MC Breed opened the doors for artists like Eminem, D12, and even Kid Rock to be seen and heard by the masses.

Breed got down with several of the west coast’s finest throughout his illustrious career, including Warren G, Too $hort, Ant Banks, 2Pac, D.O.C., Rappin’ 4-Tay, and Spice-1 to name a few. Shortly after he exploded on the scene, he made a move to L.A., where he formed lasting friendship with the D.O.C. The new friendship found Breed in the studio with The Chronic creators: D.O.C., Dr. Dre, Warren G and Colin Wolfe. In fact, his 3rd album, The New Breed, included the assistance of D.O.C., Warren G & Colin Wolfe, and featured the late 2Pac on the hit single Gotta Get Mine.

Later, you could find Breed hanging out with Too $hort and his Dangerous Crew, where he did several collaborations with the Oakland mack including Never Talk Down, We Do This, Buy You Some and others. He also featured with M.C. Pooh (Don’t Cost A Dime), Spice-1 (Ballin’), Ant Banks (Money Don’t Make A Man and 4 Tha Hustlaz), as well as having Dangerous Crew producers Ant Banks and Shorty B work on a few of his solo efforts like Big Baller, Funkafied and Flatline.

Before his untimely passing, Dubcnn’s own Chad Kiser and Jon Hay had the chance to speak to with MC Breed on a number of occasions regarding his past accomplishments, as well as his future projects. One of those projects he talked about included a new album in the works, tentatively titled Original Breed: Swag Heavy, which was intended to be released through his original recording home Ichiban Records. Although the project was still in development, Breed had reached out a few of his homies to help create the record, such as producer’s Erotic D and Ant Banks (who both contributed to his Flatline album), D.O.C., Spice-1, Too $hort, Jazze Pha and Colin Wolfe.

news Young Keno Recognises "The Stakes Is High" - November 21, 2008 By : Rud

It's been a few months since we dropped some news and media from Young Keno who shot onto Dubcnn when his music made its way onto Power 106 earlier this year - a feat for some signed acts let alone a fresh independent artist. So far in 2008 we brought you tracks including Let's Get Together with Roscoe Umali & Sharis, Fresh 2 Def with Hot Dollar and Gotta Get This Paper with Roscoe Umali, Damani, & Stress of The Federation.

Back in June we dropped back-to-back updates on Young Keno with the release of the Let's Get Together Remix with Omar Cruz & Wiz Khalifa followed by an Exclusive Interview.

Today we are back with two new Young Keno tracks - both from his upcoming DJ Ill Will & DJ Rockstar presented mixtape; "The Stakes is High" (300 Edition)." The first "Lonely at the Top" features SRC Rapper and Dubcnn regular Topic as well as Los Angeles singer E-Note - who last year shot to attention when appearing on "Blutiful World" by Spider Loc. The new track was produced by another Dubcnn regular XL Middleton so you know it's not to be missed!

Young Keno - Lonely At The Top (Feat. Topic & E-Note) (Produced By XL Middleton)

Next up is a track that some may have heard last week when it leaked as a street single. "Tattoo's & Jewelry" features Guerilla Black and Hot Dollar and can be heard below - we also just got word that a Star Studded Remix has been made and will be released soon so stay tuned to Dubcnn.

news Kidz In The Hall To Appear on 106 & Park - November 21, 2008 By : Chad Kiser

Kidz In The Hall, currently on a 35-City National Tour sponsored by Microsoft ZUNE, are continuing to build off the success of their sophomore album, The In Crowd. The group's second single and video for their song "Love Hangover" featuring Estelle is going to be The New Joint on BET's 106 & Park today, Friday November 21st airing at 6PM EST. The video debuted on BET's new show The Deal last week and the group will be an invited guest on the show in early December. Few Independent artists have had the opportunity to break into the national spotlight that 106 & Park provides. This is yet another stepping stone for Kidz In The Hall, reaffirming their premier status in Hip Hop.

"Love Hangover" is also in rotation at MTV 2, MTVU, MTV Jamz, VH1 Soul, Music Choice & FUSE. The video has been added into programming for United Airlines and US Airways as well. Furthermore, starting December 26th and running for one month, Kidz In The Hall will be the featured artist highlighted on Nordstrom’s website. The promotion consists of reviews, and a stream of their LOVE HANGOVER video. It's a way for Nordstrom's to offer a spotlight to music and videos that they believe their customers will appreciate.

"Love Hangover" is also receiving radio support with mixshow spins from marquee DJs such as Envy, Self, ENUFF, Mr. Cee, and Cocoa Chanelle to name a few.

In other recent news, Kidz In The Hall's first single "Driving Down The Block" has been included in the soundtrack for Rockstar Game's Midnight Club LA. This is Kidz In The Hall's second major gaming licensing deal, after their song "The Blackout" was featured as only one of twenty tracks in EA Sports Madden 09.

Double O of Kidz In The Hall is excited about the promotions, saying "this is another great milestone for Kidz In The Hall, Duck Down Records, Major League Entertainment and our overall team. The album and its music has exceeded our expectations and proves that good, quality music can rise to the top."

news LaLa Releases Her "American Mija" Mixtape On Dubcnn - November 14, 2008 By : Nima

We announced this mixtape back in April when we dropped her Sprung On A Thug" single with The Game, and it has arrived at last! Sexy West Coast Latina LaLa is dropping her debut mixtape "American Mija", which is presented by DJ Vida V, for free download on dubcnn.com.

The 24-tracks deep mixtape features both original production and a few covers of classics such as "It Was A Good Day" and "Goin' Back To Cali". LaLa also got some high profile support on there from The Game, B-Real, Mack 10, Fingazz, Nu Jerzey Devil, MDK, Ese Daz, Lil Rob and Diamonique.

Dubcnn got a few words from LaLa about the mixtape and what it means to her: "Vida and I really wanted to do a little something for the ladies and remind all the fellas how us Westside girls roll!! I wanted listeners to get a chance to know me a little better musically, and take them on a ride through Cali, showing our influences, rapping over OG West Coast classic. We also had to throw in the movie sound bites cause Mi Vida Loca and Selena is our shit!"

Download "American Mija" by clicking below:

DJ Vida V Presents LaLa - American Mija (Mixtape) [Download]

LaLa also had a few words to say about the message she's trying to deliver and who she's trying to reach with her music: "Right now it's really about redefining for people what it means to be Latina and from the West. There are so many negative stereotypes out there, we are just knockin' them down left and right. It's really my goal to make all girls around the world wish they was from Cali and let everybody know that the ladies have stories to tell too", she explains.

Expect to hear a lot more from LaLa, including her upcoming single featuring Fat Joe, which you can expect to hear on dubcnn soon. LaLa and DJ Vida V will also be blogging on dubcnn on a regular basis, as they feel that we need more stuff for the ladies - and we totally agree.

news B-Real Statement Regarding Mellow Man Ace Interview - November 13, 2008 By : Rud

Earlier this week Dubcnn featured an interview with Mellow Man Ace - if you missed that then ensure you check it now - Exclusive Interview With Mellow Man Ace.

The interview caused another legend to contact Dubcnn to make a statement to clear up some of the information in the interview and the Dubcnn introduction. B-Real - of Cypress Hill, who is currently working on his solo album "Smoke N Mirrors" due for release on February 24th 2009 contacted Dubcnn to make the following statement.

"To clear up a little bit of this information here, Mellow was never a part of Cypress Hill. When Mellow's first record came out, Cypress Hill had barely been formed. We were all a crew together, but there was never any direction for a group. When Mellow got in the door, we had already met Muggs, and then we started working on demos.

So when he said something about "his decision to leave Cypress Hill," there was no Cypress Hill to leave at the time. Clearly, Cypress Hill got signed in 1990, and his first record was in 1988. I think he's maybe a little bit confused about that.

As far as his contribution to my solo record, he was definitely involved in the beginning process. I give him credit for that. I value his opinion as an artist. But as far as the new Cypress record goes, that a very formulated thing between me, Sen Dog, and Muggs. That process is between the three of us, and he was never really involved in that. I read the interview he just released, and I was taken aback by some of the information in it, so I thought I would clear it up. I've got love for Mellow, he's my family, and I wish him luck on everything."

Our thanks go to B-Real for providing the statement and if you missed the interview it relates to then check out our Exclusive Interview With Mellow Man Ace today.

In related news B-Real and Young De just released Behind The Scenes Footage of their new video for Don't You Dare Laugh featuring Young De and Produced by Scoop Deville. The track, premiered on Dubcnn in September, will feature on "Smoke & Mirrors" next year. Check below to view the footage.

news Kurupt & Roscoe Album Out Now / Exclusive News - November 12, 2008 By : Nima

Dubcnn hooked up with Kurupt to get a few words on the Kurupt & Roscoe album, "The Frank & Jess Story", which was officially released yesterday, November 11th 2008, through High Powered Ent/Koch Records. The album was produced by J. Silva and features Daz, Kokane, Too Short, Rob Quest and Gail Gotti amongst others.

"This album was long overdue. Me and Scodie have always kept it pushing and it was about time we came full circle for a whole album. This is just the start, you can expect many more albums from me and Roscoe", Kurupt said.

Throughout the last weeks, Kurupt and Roscoe have been on a nationwide promo tour, networking and promoting the album on different radio stations. "We were out in New York, DJ Whoo Kid showed us a lot of love, everybody at G-Unit Radio, Shade 45, they fuck with us heavy. Even Kay Slay, that's my nigga! I ain't kicked it with him like that before, but I got a chance to meet him and he's a real cool cat. They all supported the project, so anything any of those DJ's need, Kay Slay, Whoo Kid, Angela Yee (Lip Service), they all support us big", he said about the duo's promo tour, which also featured 40 Glocc and Gail Gotti.

"We was just having a ball, that's what the album was about. It's conscious but fun at the same time - and all West Coast. We've got conscious records on there like "All I Need" with Daz and the one with me and Rob from the Coughee Brothaz, which is some smooth, real life shit." About the albums producer, High Powered Ent's John Silva, Kurupt had nothing but good things to say: "John really put this record together and I think people are gonna see some of his best work on there."

We already brought you two tracks off the album, "Break It Down Like" with Too Short and the introspective "I Got U", but here go two of my personal favorites off "The Frank & Jess Story", incase you need more convincing to go pick it up:

Kurupt & Roscoe - All I Need (ft. Daz Dillinger)
Kurupt & Roscoe - No Time To Waste (ft. Kokane, Rob Quest & T-Mac)

Incase you haven't done so yet, make sure to go pick up Kurupt & Roscoe's "The Frank & Jess Story", available in stores and online now!

However, knowing Kurupt, he already has plenty of other projects he's putting together, most notably the Kurupt & DJ Quik album "Blaqkout" (spelt qk for "Q"uik and "K"urupt). This album is shaping up to be one of the most promising to drop in the near future.

"Me and Quik is next with the Blaqkout. The album is real proper, we put our foot in on this one! We're about 90% done, about two more songs to do and Quik is already mixing the tracks. This is a step above a lot of things we've done lately, Kurupt explains.

"I told Quik that people don't want too much time to go by before another Quik album comes out. He's part of the history out here and they wanna hear him! He said fuck it, let's ride out! We did a few records and he was loving it, the chemistry was there. We're both rapping on the album and Quik did all the production." If that's not enough information to get the excitement up for "Blaqkout", then I don't know what is.

Apart from that, you can also expect the upcoming Dogg Pound album "100 Wayz", a Kurupt solo album called "Street Lights" entirely produced by Terrace Martin, and another Kurupt solo produced by Snoop Dogg. "Each of these are totally different albums, none of them sound the same. Each of them got its own concept", Kurupt described his various solo projects.

As usual, you can expect the latest news on Kurupt and the rest of the Dogg Pound Gang, right here on dubcnn.

news Exclusive Interview With Mellow Man Ace - November 12, 2008 By : Jonathan Hay

Everybody knows that Mellow Man Ace is a legend, and an original member of Cypress Hill, who left to pioneer the Latin hip-hop world, to cross over into the US and sell millions of records worldwide. His record-breaking classic single “Mentirosa” gave birth to a completely new genre of successful music now categorized as “Reggaeton.” As Mellow Man Ace put it in this Dubcnn exclusive interview, “The importance of the song Mentirosa is much like that of Roberto Clemente or Jackie Robinson’s influence on modern day athletics in terms of what they did for blacks and Latino's in major league baseball.”

His staggering success is documented in the history books forever; however, we go where no interview has ever gone before with Mellow Man Ace. We travel beneath the surface as Mellow personally opens up and exposes the transparency of his inner self – as we feel the hurt and tears from the Latino struggle, to own personal struggles, including the pain and conflict with his own flesh and blood brother, SenDog (from Cypress Hill). We speak on deep social issues such as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the industry, Politics – or as he calls them “Politricks” -- and even Marijuana…

This interview reveals the truth and vulnerability that many people are afraid to show. It doesn’t get any more real than this…it also doesn’t get anymore West Coast than this interview. It’s an honor for Chad and I to be a part of this historic conversation for Dubcnn.

In B-Real's first ever solo effort, Smoke N Mirrors, he wanted to showcase his musical talent over beats produced by Alchemist, Scoop Deville, & Sick Jacken (from Psycho Realm). Official press release: In a bold move designed to introduce their music all along the West Coast hip hop duo, Dem HoodStarz, have organized their own tour with the ever popular E-40 as the headliner. The Wake It Up Tour will visit 19 cities including Seattle, Las Vegas, San Deigo, Los Angeles, and Portland.

The tour recently began in Costa Mesa, CA and runs until November 25th. All of the artists on the tour are Dem HoodStarz, Big Rich, Keak Da Sneak, and Glasses Malone. Hip Hop veteran Too Short will also join them on select dates.

Dem Hoodstarz, are the Bay Area’s newest and hottest kids on the block made up of wordsmiths Band-Aide and Scoot. “People believe because we are from the Bay we’re all Hyphy. We grew up in that era but that’s not what we’re about. Our music is a mixture of Hyphy, West Coast, East Coast and Dirty South. We do it all and The Wake It Up Tour will urge audiences not to sleep on us,” says Scoot.

With the Ambassador of the Bay, E-40 side-by-side on stage, fans can get ready and set to get their monies worth. “Expect me to perform old school vintage E-40 songs and new school current E-40 songs, expect leadership crowed participation , lots of energy, excitement and stage presence. One thing my momma always told me was where ever I go and what ever I do, show up and show out, Hello!,” says E-40.

Dem HoodStarz sophomore album, "Black Friday", is scheduled to drop November 21, 2008, but their first single, “Code of the Streets,” is already receiving spins in several markets. Their second release, “I Got A Problem," featuring Gucci Mane, is gaining nods around the country as well. Although Dem Hoodstarz hail from the Bay Area, they don’t hail to be all Hyphy. The two say they are all street and every time they grab a mic that’s what they represent. "We got hot tracks they need to hear,” adds Band-Aide.

Dem Hoodstarz made their debut in 2007 with their hit single, "Grown Man On," produced by San Jose's Traxamillion from their freshman album Band-Aide & Scoot. Currently signed to their own independent label, Lawless Records, they are charted on a course to the land ultimate stardom and the Wake It Up Tour is the first rocket they’re launching to get them there.

The duo are releasing the new album "We Mean Business" on their own imprint EP Records and having got back together after their initial split in 1993 the duo said in an interview earlier this year; "We’re not out here to conform to radio or worry about who’s digging it. We're gonna let the music do the talking on this one as we have just received the "We Mean Business" album sampler and we have it here for download or to listen to via our streaming flash audio players.

news Indef Delivers "The Product" With Bishop Lamont (D/L) - November 4, 2008 By : Rud

Last week we reported on the release of the first mixtape offering from Santa Monica and West Los Angeles native Indef (short for Indefinite). As a name he has featured on Dubcnn countless times - but this time it is as a sole artist - not a feature on another project.

Although we were informed this would release on Halloween, there was an unexplained delay, and we now have this for you for free download today. "The Product" shows this unconventional MC can stand well and truly on his own two feet and outlines his witty, off-kilter, and socially conscious lyrics.

Since his appearances on projects indluding J Dilla's "Dirty Instinct Exit 3," the "Tupac Assassination Soundtrack" and the Bishop Lamont projects Pope Mobile, N*gger Noize, The Confessional and Caltriot, Indef has been working on "The Product" and is now ready to deliver.

"The Product" is hosted by Bishop Lamont and presented by Aftermath Records & Diocese Records, the 19-track-set features all original music with guest appearances from Butch Cassidy, Bishop Lamont, Taje, Noni Spitz, Mike Ant, & Young De as well as production from Focus, DJ Khalil, Black Milk, Dae One, Thayod, & "Jedi" Jared Moore. So far you have heard three tracks; Ryda featuring Noni Spitz, The Howling with Bishop Lamont & Bokie Loc and Whoo, produced by Dae One

news Belated Weekend Audio: Bun B, DPG, Evidence, Roscoe... - November 3, 2008 By : Nima

We're running a little late on last week's Weekend Audio update, but what the hell, the point is to get you the latest new music, so yeah, we're doing the Weekend Audio update on Monday! We're starting and ending this week with special Election Day tracks, and in between, we've got new music from Daz & Kurupt, Tekneek & Roscoe, One-2 and Mr. Short Khop.

Let's dip down south to start things off. The H-Town All Stars, aka Bun B, Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Trae and Corey Mo came together for a track called "Obama '08", encouraging everybody to vote.

The track came off really dope, each artists comes off and the energetic production makes the track a perfect soundtrack for election day. Download "Obama '08" below:

Bun B, Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Trae & Corey Mo - Obama '08

We're heading out to Philly for the next track, as producer/rapper extraordinaire Tekneek has cooked up some new heat for us! He's joined forces with DJ Kay Slay's artist Big Lou to form the group Ben Franklin Bridge. Tek sent over the first joint they recorded together, for which they reached out to none others than Roscoe and former Re-Up Gang member Sandman. The result is a banger called "Dangerous", which I urge everybody to check out by clicking below:

Ben Franklin Bridge (Tekneek & Big Lou) - Dangerous (ft. Roscoe & Sandman)

Next up is a new joint off the highly anticipated "Layover EP" by Dilated Peoples MC Evidence, which we've been reporting on for the past couple of weeks. This will be the EP to hold fans over until Ev's new solo LP "Cats & Dogs" drops in early 2009. DJ Skee hooked up with Evidence to present the project, and after we brought you the track "For Whom The Bell Tolls", which features will.i.am, Phonte and Blu last week, here is another track called "Tip The Scale", over The Game's DJ Khalil-produced "My Bitch" beat:

Evidence - Tip The Scale

A few weeks ago, Tha Dogg Pound dropped their "Dogg Pound Gangsta Grillz" mixtape with DJ Drama called "Full Circle". We've just received word that Daz and Kurupt are in the lab putting together a follow up mixtape to "Full Circle", which should be hitting dubcnn soon. This will be leading up to the "100 Wayz" album coming early 2009. We've got an exclusive off the new mixtape for ya'll called "Bonafide Hustler" which you can check out below. I had to listen twice until I recognized Kurupt, check it out for yourselves below:

Tha Dogg Pound - Bonafide Hustler

Let's get to an artist who dissapeared years ago and left fans wondering where he went. I'm talking about Mr. Short Khop, the former Ice Cube protege, most known for his single "Dollaz, Drank & Dank" and his guest appearances on Ice Cube's smash hit "Pushin' Weight". After his album "Da Khop Shop" dropped in 2001, things turned quiet around him, and a few guest appearances here and there were all we got in the last years. The homie Amplified just sent over a new track Short Khop recorded called "Donkee Talk", produced by 21:

Mr. Short Khop - Donkee Talk

In last week's Weekend Audio update, we brought you an exclusive joint off Treacherous Records artist One-2's upcoming third mixtape "UNO". Incase you missed it, check out "Can't Afford It", which features Cashis, by clicking here. The new mixtape is dropping soon, and we've just been sent the intro track off the project, which is called "Mr. International". One-2 once again showcases his immense lyrical skills over a banging Komplex production, check it out below:

One-2 - Mr. International

We're going to end off this Weekend Audio update with another Election Day related track, this time by Bay Area artists Mac & A.K.. They've recorded a new track called "Change", which obviously touches on "change in America" and the upcoming presidential election. No word on who produced the track, but this is West Coast at its finest! The track is set to appear on "Westbound 2", the follow up to the 1996 debut EP. Make sure to check out "Change":

Mac & A.K. - Change

We're done, enjoy the tracks and make sure to go out and vote tomorrow if you haven't done so yet!
