It is the general consensus in the entertainment industry and business world that interactive media (i.e. video games) are the future of entertainment. With that being said, video games have finally begun to make their legitimate foray into hip-hop lifestyle and music with titles such as Beaterator and DJ Hero. Beaterator is an interesting experiment in gaming from Rockstar's UK division in Leeds. The game is not a traditional game in the sense that there is no objective to the game, no adversary, and no goal. The player for the most part is essentially given a blank canvas to produce music and experiment with the music making tools in this game.

This lack of focus somewhat detracts from the gaming aspect of the title as a user is basically presented with a mini production studio and given little direction as to what do with it. On the other hand the freedom and robustness of the production software in this title is impressive, especially considering its low cost compared to real studio production software and equipment. If one really wanted to they could make beats on their copy of Beaterator and pass them around to artists to get on the tracks, as the program allows you to easily export the tracks for your own personal use to your computer or the internet. I applaud Rockstar for keeping the distribution platform for the content generated by this title open and not proprietary.
This is one fo the game's biggest stengths, as it expands the potential uses for the game.
If you are a serious producer I don't recommend you grab this title, as iit will limit your capability to produce quality tracks with ease. Beaterator, however, is perfect for people curious about music production or hip-hop fans who like to play around with music production sofware for fun. Who knows, the Timbalands and Dr. Dres of this generation may get their start by picking up a game like Beaterator and making beats on their PSP.
